The Indian Army's infantry was decimated early in the war and left the front in 1915. The cavalry however remained in combat, largely dismounted, until the carnage of Cambrai sealed its fate and the remaining men and officers, apart from a few who elected to transfer and remain in France, left for Syria in March 1918.

The men generally considered this to be 'trading up' - it was warmer and closer to home.
